Job Search Tools

by Jason Alba on Mar 1st 2010 6:00AM

job search toolsRewind to four years ago. I was a new job seeker trying to figure out what the heck a job search was (actually, I was really just trying to figure out how to get a job, but no one was falling all over themselves to offer me a job). I knew about job boards, of course, and figured that's where my job leads would come from. I knew I needed a resume (hard to apply to a job without a resume). I knew I should network (ugh). But that's about it - as a job seeker that seemed to be all I had that I could call a "tool."

Today I have a better understanding of the job search, and tools you could use. Here are tools I recommend:

Unemployment Spreads Like a Pandemic

by Rigel Celeste on Dec 1st 2009 1:28AM

Of course we all already know that things are really bad out there in terms of unemployment -- it's pretty much all anybody talks about anymore -- but the map shown above has an interesting take on the situation. By showing how unemployment has changed over recent months and years it paints a scary picture of it spreading and growing worse like a disease pandemic.

Just click above and you'll go to the interactive map that shows how unemployment numbers have changed by both state and by individual county from January 2007 (about a year before the trouble hit) to today. How has your corner of the country fared? I can't help but notice that this map pretty well supports the recovery statistics I wrote about before.

State of the Economy: A Guide to Severance Packages

by Stephen Lytle on Sep 29th 2009 6:30AM

Severance, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary is: "The state or condition of being severed or separated, as in the ending of a relationship." Nevertheless, as most of us know the definition, it is a company benefit, a parting gift, something to walk away with, and better than a watch at retirement (generally). However, unlike retirement, no matter what your pockets are loaded with when you leave that job you are still going to be left looking for a new job in a tough market.

Unemployment at a 26 Year High

by Alex Rudloff on Jul 2nd 2009 10:37AM
June payrolls fell by 467,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That was higher than the 365,000 jobs economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected employers would shed.

The BLS said job losses were widespread across the major industry sectors, with large declines occurring in manufacturing, professional and business services and construction. While the BLS called the 9.5 percent unemployment rate "little changed," the rate did climb from the previous month's rate, reaching a 26-year high. Still, the rise wasn't as steep as economists had projected. The number of unemployed persons (14.7 million) was little changed.
The job search just got that much more competitive. Get that resume together!

Stretching the dollar: Between job savings

by Randall Bennett on Jun 30th 2009 1:13PM
So for many workers, like myself, we've never gone through a major downturn in our careers. As a result, our short-sightedness has put us in a difficult position of being strapped financially, which makes life pretty rough. How are you cutting back costs and stretching your dollar?

For us, our first stop is cutting out unnecessary expenses. Think about it, people can spend up to $60 per month on cable / satellite TV alone. Do you really NEED HBO? Or for that matter, do you really need cable TV at all? Cutting back temporarily while you're still in the midst of job searching can create a longer runway to find the right gig, rather than the necessary gig.

Along the same tip, we've started clipping coupons. Spending half the money for a full load of groceries is more than doable, though admittedly for single people, the savings don't add up as quickly as they do for larger families.

What's your dollars and cents savings? How do you lengthen the job searching runway so you end up with the right gig, rather than any gig?

Consumer Confidence on the Rise

by Stephen Lytle on May 27th 2009 2:50PM

Consumer confidence has risen to an eight month high, as reported by the The New York-based private research organization Conference Board. What does this mean for you? More spending by the general public and private/public companies. As a direct result we will see the economy slowly start to strengthen, triggering less employment cuts by some companies and new hiring by others.

"Looking ahead, consumers are considerably less pessimistic than they were earlier this year, and expectations are that business conditions, the labor market and incomes will improve in the coming months," Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said. "While confidence is still weak by historic standards, as far as consumers are concerned, the worst is now behind us."

With confidence in the economy strengthening you can prepare for future opportunities by developing your own insight and knowledge to your specific industry that you are involved with, updating your resume, and applying for jobs now if a move is warranted.

Job Loss Timeline

by Alex Rudloff on May 8th 2009 11:52AM
Another really awesome timeline showing job losses across the country during the recession. This one's done by Slate Magazine and is a little easier to digest the numbers.

My thoughts are the same as on the last one. It'd be so neat to see this done over the last century and I think would provide a better understanding of the boom and bust cycles that we go through. It'd also provide some context to the magnitude of it all.

Imagine this screen going back and forth over time. In the top right you have a picture of whatever sitting president was in office at the time, who controlled congress underneath, and then a chart of the Dow moving along in tandem.

Now that would be cool!

Job Loss by Region

by Alex Rudloff on May 2nd 2009 10:17AM
Another really neat flash based tool for viewing the regional effects of the recession.

It's an animated time line of job growth from 2004 to the current quarter. It's pretty interesting to see where the jobs started dropping off. Not surprisingly, the areas with the bigger booms were followed by the bigger busts. The auto-industry is the exception.

I'd love to see this done using data going as far back as available. At least through the last couple of recessions. Regardless of its short time frame, this is a really effective way to digest the state of the economy.

Online Job Forecasts

by Alex Rudloff on May 1st 2009 9:00AM
USA Today has an excellent online tool for viewing job forecasts all over the country. The information is updated monthly from information provided by Moody's Economy.com.

The job forecast tool is flash based and lets you view data by metro or by state. You can also narrow in on 14 specific sectors. At a glance you can see what regions of the country are most effected by the criteria, and when experts believe the hiring will pick up.

Seems like an excellent resource for folks!
