Why Your Resume Gets Tossed

by Stephen Lytle on Sep 29th, 2009

I recently came across this article on Yahoo.com describing the many reason why your resume gets tossed from the "might use" to the "never use" pile. There are some good tips in this article that touch on the following:

  • If accomplishments can be quantified, do it -- but use discretion
  • If you send a cover letter by email that starts with 'Hi,' it and your resume will probably end up in the trash.
  • It's true that recruiters sometimes use scanners to sort through resumes looking for certain keywords.
  • If you mention your age, we have to trash your resume.
  • When recruiters see a resume that's designed differently, they think the person's trying to hide something.

State of the Economy: A Guide to Severance Packages

by Stephen Lytle on Sep 29th, 2009

Severance, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary is: "The state or condition of being severed or separated, as in the ending of a relationship." Nevertheless, as most of us know the definition, it is a company benefit, a parting gift, something to walk away with, and better than a watch at retirement (generally). However, unlike retirement, no matter what your pockets are loaded with when you leave that job you are still going to be left looking for a new job in a tough market.

Thinking of Taking that New Job? Check the Cost of Living.

by Stephen Lytle on Jul 15th, 2009
So you've been offered a new position with a great company... in New York; too bad you currently live in Ohio and know nothing about judging salaries off in the big city. How do you determine whether this is the best move for you not just today, but tomorrow and farther into the future as well?

Here's a few link to help you properly assess your new job opportunity:

Costs of living index – Here is a simple calculator that will help you to determine your costs of living in the market you are currently in vs. a market you would want to move to. It breaks down costs of living into categories such as food, housing, utilities, transportation, and others. Additionally, it will tell you what you should be making in that market comparable to your current compensation to keep your standard of living you presently maintain.

Salary Wizard – Emurse.com has a great salary wizard that will let you search by job title and location and will also let you know what you should be making based on your years of experience. From that point you can see what you are worth based on whether you have a job offer in hand, are currently employed, etc. Finally you can add value to your worth by adding your certifications, degrees, etc. This calculator is probably one of the best and most data intensive I have seen to give you an accurate portrayal of your own value.

Job Assessment tool – This tool will help you to evaluate and determine your job satisfaction in your current role based on many factors including but not limited to compensation, benefits, boss, advancement, job security, etc. After your initial evaluation you will be able to determine the same factors in a potential job offer and compare the two for overall compatibility.

Are Awards worth mentioning on a resume?

by Randall Bennett on Jul 14th, 2009
Emurse gives users an option to add in awards and honors to their resumes, but which honors should you mention, and which are better left on the trophy shelf?

As an early-to-mid career person myself, I haven't quite amassed the trophy case I'm one day aiming for, but that doesn't mean I won't mention significant honors if they apply to the job. Once again, customization is key, making sure your audience (the potential employer) sees exactly what they expect as a smart, qualified applicant is key.

I've received some local honors from my time in Utah, but now that I'm competing for jobs in the Big Apple, I tend to leave any regional award that's not easily explained out. Obviously an award like "[Job Function] of the year" explains itself, but I find myself leaving out awards named for individuals, or given by specific companies that aren't so-called "boldface names" as they won't hold any substantial weight with a potential employer.

What's your take on awards?
Do you use them as a leg-up on other potential candidates? Have you ever nabbed an interview based on a specific award you listed on a resume?

Using LinkedIn+Emurse for Your Job Search

by Stephen Lytle on Jul 14th, 2009
Search. Click, Submit. Search. Click. Submit... Repeat. Over and over again you submit your resume to online job postings with little to no feedback. You can search on multiple search engines but without having the right resources at your disposal, your results will be typical. How do you overcome this drought and help your job search blossom?

Why not add LinkedIn to your arsenal of job hunting sites?

Resume Rescue: Achievements, not Responsibilities

by Rigel Celeste on May 19th, 2009
In a job market that's growing more competitive every day, having an effective, impressive resume that stands out from the crowd is key. Looking to fine tune yours but not sure where to start? No worries, our Resume Rescue series is here to help!

Your resume is supposed to give a potential employer an idea of who you are and what your skill set is, but often just ends up being a boring list of all your previous jobs and their responsibilities. Who cares! Realize that most of the people applying will have had similar responsibilities and experiences, so focus on your achievements instead.

What did you do besides the bare minimum that was expected of you? How did you stand out at each previous job and what did you accomplish?

Example:

Tired
Responsibilities included client retention, team reporting and new hire training.

Hired
Developed strong personal relationships with clients leading to higher retention levels, produced monthly sales activity report listing details for each of 12 team members, trained 3 new hires and taught successful closing techniques.

What Does a Resume Do, Really?

by Rigel Celeste on May 14th, 2009
Understanding what your resume is really supposed to do is key to putting your best self forward on paper. Most people think of their resume as a job application, but it's really an interview application.

No matter how well put together it is, a resume alone won't get you a job. What it can do is get you in the door for a face-to-face interview, which (if you nail it) is what will land you the job.

So keep in mind when writing your resume that it's purpose is to get you an interview, not get you a job.

In addition to our own resume tips, DailyWritingTips.com has put together a list of 44 resume tips to help guide your resume writing.
