Guy Makes $83K a Year Wearing a T-Shirt

by Alex Rudloff on Nov 6th, 2009

jason sadlerHere's a creative solution to the economic downturn -- let people pay you to wear their swag.

Jason Sadler, 26, sells companies the opportunity for him to wear their company's shirt for a day. He charges what he calls "face value", meaning January 1st costs $1 and December 31st costs $365. It might not sound like a ton of cash, but it adds up to $66,795 on a sold out calendar. He then sells monthly sponsorships adding upwards of $18,000 to his take home.

It may seem like one of those ridiculous ideas that would never actually work, but last year Jason made $83,000. According to BLS.gov, the average US take home was $32,000.

Here's the best part. In true entreprenuerial style, Jason's hiring on the west coast of the United States to expand his fledgling company's reach. Time to start bombarding his website with that Emurse resume. Make sure to mention how awesome your farmer's tan is in the cover letter!

We've got Jobs! Job Board Roundup

by Alex Rudloff on Nov 4th, 2009
Two really cool positions available for all you Mac Developers out there. Cocoa development is all the rage these days, isn't it? Both positions are contract based.

  • Mac Developer for Graphics Focused Project: Have a passion for graphics and a background in computer science? This may be the perfect gig. Joshua Distler, an award winning designer and Apple alumnus, is looking for a code ninja to help him turn his patent pending techniques into a world class Macintosh application. He's looking for someone with " the ability to implement mathematical algorithms and concepts in C++, C# or Java."
  • iPhone Developer - Groupon.com is looking for a crème de la crème iPhone developer. They're based out of Chicago but they're down with the telecommuting if you're not down with the windy city. Groupon is sort of like a localized version of woot. Mobile is big, shopping is big and local is the "next big thing." Seems like a great opportunity with a really cool startup!

Remember kids, if you're looking for great technology jobs or are looking to hire some "Grade A" talent, check out both TUAW and DownloadSquad's job boards. Posting on one gets you distribution across both. Not to mentioned featured in a killer Emurse post like this one. Can't be beat.

by Alex Rudloff on Aug 22nd, 2009
Say what you want about bartending, but it sure does seem to offer job security!

After 77 years of pouring drinks, the Guinness Book of World Records' longest serving bartender is finally hanging it up. Cammarata's Cafe, the establishment built by Angelo Cammarata and now owned by his sons, has been sold. Angelo is 95 years old.

While others may be able to claim tending bar for long periods of time, what gives Angelo the edge is his start date – the stroke of midnight, April 7, 1933. The very second prohibition ended in the United States.

5 Questions with a Creative Director

by Alex Rudloff on Jul 23rd, 2009
Are you the creative type? Maybe you've thought about being a designer online or even a more traditional magazine. Wouldn't it be cool to work with both?

For our next career spotlight, we spoke with Patrick Greenish Jr. Patrick is the Creative Director for Conceive, a company in Orlando, FL that produces online and offline content for all aspects of fertility.

What can you tell us about where you work?

I work for Conceive, a multi-media corporation devoted to all aspects of fertility and getting pregnant. We produce a quarterly magazine called Conceive Magazine and a weekly podcast called Conceive On-Air. We've also published three books (Fertility Journal, Fertility Facts and Cooking to Conceive), and run an up-to-date in-depth website.

How did you find your employment?

I actually found it through a friend who referred me for the position. I was already working for another company when I was approached for this position.

What are some of your job functions and responsibilities?

I am responsible for designing each issue of Conceive Magazine, and for managing our freelance photographers and illustrators that we use issue to issue. I am also responsible for managing our website, collateral and marketing materials, and overall brand management.

What do you like most about being a Creative Director?

The freedom of making something new everyday, whether it is a creative marketing idea or a new design, plus I always walk away satisfied that I help couples start their families.

Personal Goals?

I am currently working on my web and SEO knowledge so our site can get more of the market share. I hope to see the company and I grow to a point where I oversee a team of designers and programmers while solely focusing on Conceive's brand and new product development.

Staying Out of Trouble: The Importance of Pre-Interview Research

by Alex Rudloff on Jul 10th, 2009
Our friends over at Rock The Job have a new video up discussing the importance of researching the company before your interview. Eric, a guest on the show, recalls a job he once took without properly investigating what the company actually did. Turns out, he soon found himself working for an e-mail spam company!

As the economy continues to sour, many are finding themselves more and more desperate for a new job. It's worth remembering that doing your homework before accepting any position is still just as important. Taking a job that is not the best fit may distract you from finding a job you really love.

Have you ever found yourself in an interview that wasn't exactly what you had hoped for, or worse, found yourself employed by a company only to find out they're selling Viagra via e-mail?

Share your stories with us!
