Best Buy is making trendy online social networking waves in the job market with a posting that appeared recently on their website that listed two preferred job qualifications: a graduate degree and 250 or more followers on Twitter.Say what?
Yes, now your guilty online tweeting habit can be something to brag about on a job application. Of course you'll want to know your audience before you go pasting your follower count on every resume, but companies that want someone with online social media experience are getting creative with how they choose to weed out those who simply understand the internet and those who have a real online presence.
Geez, I don't even have 150 followers yet -- I better get tweeting!
(BTW, follow us on Twitter!)

For the record, follower counts drive me BATTY.
Sure, I have nearly 1000 (@randallb) but I don't think that a follower count is an accurate measure of your usefulness in a social network. The fact that it's turned into this game makes me rather annoyed.

I'm 100% with you. It started day one though.
When we created the twitterholic.com site, it was with the tongue-in-cheek mindset of calling attention to all that. We had no idea what all of this would become. Crazy to think about it. Three years is all that it took.

I agree 100%. Spammers also have tons of followers and so do porn sites. Your audience matter more than mere numbers.

I think your energies would be better spent networking than trying to build a big following on Twitter in hopes that it gets you that 'lucky critical mass'. Twitter is a tool that can be used for the job-seeker, but you really need to consider the investment/reward of using this tool.
